IMHO....We knew it was coming. We were forewarned. Oracle has completed its acquisition of Sun Microsystems this week. Sun’s CEO Jonathan Schwartz quit today via twitter. All of this is sad because of the financial crisis I think we will see less corporate innovation, more consolidation with fewer options and higher prices. Sun and Jonathan Schwartz were both innovators. Both will be missed.

I've been watching this acquisition and I have wondered what Oracle intends to do with Java. Oracle isn't known for handing out free software.

Everything I've seen leaves me optimistic about the future of java - there are a lot of reasons for oracle to stay a good steward not least of which is the fact that a large number of big customers that use it.

The bigger concern I have is MySQL. Oracle already has INNODB. What do they need a free DB for? Larry can't buy new yacht's with free software. We are already starting to see folks move away from MySQL to Postgres and other DB's. I love MySQL but I wonder about it's future.

I think perhaps the future of MySQL is going to depend on the open source community. Should projects continue to abandon MySQL, then I think Oracle will just let it die. If however, open source communities continue using MySQL I could see Oracle continue supporting MySQL but perhaps using the RedHat model. Where the software is still free, but support costs money.
